Cynthia Erivo had an emotional outburst when she saw herself as Elphaba in the final cut of Wicked.
In a new interview, Erivo was asked how many times she’s seen the film. She replied that she’d seen it a total of nine times, both at premieres and before the movie came out. Once she’d processed seeing herself on screen after her first viewing, the second was where things got emotional.
Erivo has seen the film a total of nine times including the premieres and before it came out. The first time she saw it, she got overwhelmed and couldn’t really soak it in. However, the second time brought out immense gratitude in the actress.
Speaking to Awardist, The Outsider star said: “The very first time I saw it, there was so much coming at me that I was completely overwhelmed and I think my brain completely blanked out. I erased myself from the movie. I was like, ‘I don’t think I was in that. I don’t think I was there’.”
“And the second time I saw it, I wept — like, uncontrollably wept. I couldn’t even articulate how grateful I felt to even be a part of it,” she detailed. “I couldn’t properly articulate how glad I was to see all the things I wanted of this character to be on screen. I was so, so happy.”
The Tony winning actress continued: “And then seeing the finished version blew me away. All of the details were there, everything. The finished cape, the sky, the monkeys going over the rainbow. Then I felt like an audience member. That was the first time I was like, ‘And I’m in…? I’m in.’ I feel like I’m watching this epic and I cannot believe that I get to be a part of this. It was so, so freaking cool.”
Alongside Cynthia Erivo, Wicked stars Ariana Grande as Glinda, Jonathan Bailey as Prince Fiyero, Ethan Slater as Boq and more.
