Wisconsin Republican Party chief Brian Schimming defended the involvement of individuals in the fake elector scheme during an interview with CNN’s Kate Bolduan. Despite the legal issues surrounding several fake electors nationwide, Schimming insisted that those from his state believed their actions were lawful.
The discussion took place as the Republican National Convention was about to begin, overshadowed by an attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump at a Pennsylvania rally. Bolduan highlighted that delegates from battleground states, including Wisconsin, who were involved in the fake elector scheme, would be attending the convention.
“There are seven battleground states, one of them, including Wisconsin, that some of the delegates that are coming are fake electors or others who had worked to upend the 2020 election results, to represent state parties when they’re here,” Bolduan pointed out. “When I was looking at it, it’s one fake elector as a delegate and one as an alternate for the Wisconsin, I’m going to call it the delegation.”
When pressed on whether he was comfortable with this, Schimming responded, “What it says is there are a lot of good Republicans that were involved in these elector situations in some of the states who didn’t believe they were doing anything illegal at all. So really we have good, good Republicans, as do other states, that are in their delegations that didn’t feel as though they were doing anything wrong, and in some states that was the legal feeling on it too, so that’s not an issue for us at all.”
Schimming emphasized that the GOP’s primary focus is on unity and supporting Donald Trump, noting that Trump is currently leading in the polls in the mentioned battleground states.
