JoJo Siwa is no stranger to controversy, and she’s speaking her mind once more. This time, it’s about the whispers suggesting she “stole” her latest track.
Gaining fame from Dance Moms, JoJo recently dropped her new single “Karma” on April 5, marking her shift into a more mature musical era. However, buzz around the industry hinted that Miley Cyrus and Brit Smith had recorded “Karma” demos way back in the early 2010s.
Addressing the rumors head-on, JoJo told TMZ, “I did not steal anything. There’s no such thing as stealing in music.”
The 20-year-old star explained that the mix-up likely stemmed from her producer, Rock Mafia, who previously crafted hits for Cyrus, including the iconic “Can’t Be Tamed.” According to JoJo, in the music industry, unused songs often find new life with different artists years later.
“I was given the demo, fell in love with it, and knew it was the perfect fit for the new era I wanted to usher in,” JoJo stated. “Karma makes you listen, makes you question, makes you wonder—it’s all part of the plan, and it’s working.”
Brit Smith, the original intended artist for “Karma” back in 2012, shared that she chose to release “Provocative” instead and harbors no ill feelings about JoJo picking up the track. “I’m just thrilled that the song is getting out there and people are loving it,” Smith commented to Page Six.
As JoJo navigates the stormy waters of her evolving public image—mirroring Cyrus’s own transformation a decade earlier—she remains defiant and focused on her artistic vision. Critics recently flared up over her claim to have pioneered ‘gay pop’, sparking heated debates online.
Yet, JoJo is undeterred. “Listen, no hate to me, but music evolves and I’m part of that evolution,” she remarked.
As she promotes “Karma,” only time will tell if JoJo can steer clear of further controversies. But if history is any guide, she’s just getting started on making headlines.
