Kevin Costner is diving into an entirely new genre with his next film, Headhunters, a surfing thriller set against the backdrop of Bali.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Oscar-winning actor, 69, is leaving behind the Westerns that dominated his career, including the underperforming Horizon: An American Saga and his notable role in Yellowstone.

In Headhunters, Costner will star, produce, and co-write the film under his Territory Pictures banner. Collaborating with cinematographer-turned-director Steven Holleran, who conceived the idea, the film promises to blend the high-octane energy of surf culture with the suspense of horror.

Set in a tropical paradise that soon turns into a survival nightmare, Headhunters follows Costner’s character, Lazer, a weary American ex-pat in Bali, as he teams up with Bima, played by Daniel Zovatto, to chase the perfect wave on an uncharted island. But their adventure soon devolves into a blood-soaked battle for survival.

Pre-production has already begun in Hawaii, with shooting scheduled to start next month.

Producer Scott Steindorff praised the script, calling it “one of the best” he’s encountered, while commending Costner’s charisma and depth as an actor.
