Sam McCarthy, who recently starred in Goosebumps: The Vanishing actor, shared that despite being the son of ’80s superstar Andrew McCarthy, he would have eventually chosen a career in the arts
The 22-year-old emerging star spoke to People magazine that he himself wanted to be an actor regardless of his famous parents.
“I suppose there’s that ‘sins of the father’ thing where I don’t like to say I’m following in my dad’s footsteps,” he told the outlet.
“But I do think I’d probably still be an actor, just from the way I grew up. I was raised in two different households where everybody in one way or another was interested in drama,” Sam continued. “I was that kid who did improvisation games for fun. Theater has been around me my whole life.”
Sam’s mother is an actress and playwright Carol Schneider, who remained married to his father between 1999 and 2005.
The actor’s father is known for his films like Less Than Zero, St. Elmo’s Fire, and Pretty in Pink who recently directed a documentary titled Brats.
After playing the role of Christina Applegate’s son Charlie Harding in Dead to Me, Sam took a two-year gap from industry and went to a drama school.
“I took two years off after Dead to Me to go to drama school, and Goosebumps is the first thing I’ve done since graduating,” he explains, noting that he’s OK not having the overwhelming fame his dad had at the same age.
